I have a £8000 budget to buy a car, what should I get?

New or Used

Needs to be reliable but sporty drive & feel. Fairly nippy.

Have looked at the Mazda 3 Sport but didn't quite have the power. The i30 wasn't bad but again lacked a bit of power. For some reason the Golf just seems a little over priced but I may be missing something...?

Any other suggestions?
