Roll the quad forward and back when shifting gears, while the engine is not running.
The transmission gears will not mesh properly unless the quad is moving, or the engine is running.
 
...gear and no bottom gear? I have a 99 yamaha wolverine 4x4. When I go to shift down or up it seems like there is no end to gears. I know it is a 5spd with reverse, but I can't get it to find neutral, no matter how many times I push down or up it want stop shifting. The atv is not running right now, dead battery. Does it need to have running in order to change gears? Does anyone know what could be the problem?
