I have £500 to spend on a hard-tail bike. What do you recommend?

I have a 2001(ish) Marin Bobcat Trail. I want an upgrade and I have about £500 to spend. I would say that I am a light user, don't go fully extreme or anything. I do a little bit of a hill climb followed by a big down hill and that suits me fine. I want full disc brakes, haven't had experience of using them before.
