Okay, I know that hermit crabs molt, and I know that they sometimes lose limbs and they grow back. But this mysterious incident didn't really seem like either one of those things. Our hermit crab was very still for a few days, we thought he might be dying or might have already died. So eventually I lifted the little guy to try and check..... and ALL of his legs came off (including the big claw). It didn't look like a molt to me, these legs were SOLID, whole legs. I jabbed at them with the end of a pencil and they didn't crumble in the least.
HOWEVER, when I looked into his shell... he had another set of legs already! Whole, slightly pale, legs. Since that time (it's been about a month or so) the crabbie is super happy, active, and apparently healthy.
So was it a molt and I'm just mistaken, or is this something else? I always assumed the exoskeleton from a molt would be thinner... Crabbie is totally fine now, but I'd really be interested to know what the heck happened to him!
