I guess Windows Media Center is not supported by Palm

I just upgraded my PC to a Gateway with Media Center 2005. I can Hot sync by cable/cradle but not wirelessly with WiFi. The only thing changed in the network is the PC; wireless router config, IP addressing, etc. is all the same. (I did update the MAC filter tables in case you were wondering.)

I've been playing with this thing for 2 evenings now and I still can't get it to work. I finally dug into Palms site and discovered there are known sync issues with Win MCE and they flatly state it is not supported. At least not yet. Some folks have commented that tech support has told them there may not be any fixes either.

This is too obsurd to believe. Bummer.....

Cheers,
John

PS: 2/13/6. Just updated subject heading so others might find a more useful link to this MCE 2005 problem.

John- did you say you CAN Hot Sync by cable/cradle? Is that USB? I have a new WinMC system that doesn't even allow that at this point with a Tungsten E2. Palm Support suggested today that I change the OS to XP Pro or 2000 (!! uh,huh. okeedokee.)- I've asked them for details on what breaks in WinMC and a workaround from them for WinMC (not holding breath).

Well, yes I could sync with the USB cable. I have a Gateway GT1018E with Windows MCE 2005. This was a floor display from Best Buy (didn't have a new one and gave me a nice discount on the floor unit). Unfortunately, the salesman had to send it to the 'Geek Squad' to remove the demo software, which was supposed to take about an hour.

But 4-1/2 hours later, they returned my PC with a new image stating that they had problems finding the correct drivers. (HUH? ) When I got it home I completed the install (the usual, accept licencing terms, registration, email setup, WEB setup, etc.). After screwing with this PC for two days, I discovered the Geek Squad had installed the wrong drivers anyway, was missing other software and utilities, and some HW was not working correctly. after almost an hour with the phone tech at Gateway, he decided to send me a new recovery disk. I deleted and reformatted the HD, then re-imaged it with the new disk.

It came up fine, and everything worked that haden't worked before, but I still could not get the wireless hotsync to work correctly.

I repeated the re-image process, but this time I installed *ALL* Micro$not OS updates (including some additional updates for MCE). Then I enabled the trial version of Norton Internet Suite. This along with Micro$oft Office 2003 was the only additional software installed following all the system and driver updates. And then I configured WEB and email access.

I then installed the Palm Desktop.

NOTE: You have to sync with the cable first before the handheld and desktop will recognize each other wirelessly. Don't ask me, I have no clue what is going on under the covers here....

After the initial hotsync, I set up the wireless feature on the handheld following these instructions from Palm.

From there I did a wireless hotsync and everything went OK. I don't know what was different (or what I did different here) but hotsync now works between the MCE PC and my TX. And I used these same instructions prior to reimaging my PC the second time. The only thing that was not common was to install the MCE 'rollup' patch. That one never showed up on the list of updates when the update tool analysed the machine (even though I was definately running MCE 2005).

I would recommend uninstalling the Palm Desktop and copying then renaming the directory that Palm creates in the 'Program Files' directory into another folder area . This will force the Palm Desktop to create a new backup when you reinstall. Before reinstalling the software, I would recommend making sure you install all te necessary OS security updates, patches, and MCE rollups before reinstalling the Palm software.

Cheers,
John

Hotsync by USB cable is working now on Windows Media Center Edition. Despite two firm statements from Palm this week that their software does not work with MCE. The Windows Optional Update "rollups" did the trick.
-Background- the PC is a brand new HP Athlon 64 with 200GB drive and 512M RAM purchased at Circuit City, with Windows Media Center Edition 2005. I had run into problems with Palm HotSync with a Palm Tungsten E2.
- I backed up the Palm user files and uninstalled the Palm Desktop. Then I went to the Windows Update site (broadband connection) and downloaded and installed all Updates, then, installed the Optional Software Updates specifically for Windows Media Center Edition. There was also one Optional Hardware Update (for the video monitor) and I installed that too. There were two rollups in the batch, and each one required a reboot. (And, I suspect each MCE computer might encounter a slightly different set of optional updates depending on what's already installed, when the computer was purchased, the OEM, and so on.)
- I installed the Palm Desktop which I downloaded direct from Palm. Since Palm doesn't list the Windows Media Center Edition, I decided to tell Palm I was using Windows 2000. I got the 4.1.4 English edition, about 42M in size.
-I rebooted and ran the Palm Dektop. Voila- the software asked to connect the Palm unit, found the E2 when I pressed the Hotsync button on the E2 cable, and did a HotSync perfectly.
Thanks John for your tip on the rollups! :) Rob

Being new to this message board, I may be posting this in the wrong area, but anyway....

I just wanted to say THANKS to JCRICK (John) for posting your solution to the HotSync issue with MCE!! I just bought a new HP MCE 2005 machine and was thrilled with everything...until, that is, I discovered that my Sony Clie would not work with this new pc :-(

Then I found your post and tried it...VOILA!! Worked just like you said it would ;-) I Ran Microsoft update > Installed all optional updates > uninstalled Palm Desktop > Reinstalled (also installed new update from Sony for the Palm Software) > SUCCESS!

Anyhow, I wanted to say thanks and let others know that this workaround is good for other brands (i.e. Sony CLIE's) running Palm OS.

John,

Thanks for your advice regarding the installation of the MCE ?rollup? patch. I was unable to get my Palm TX handheld to sync with my Palm desktop software installed on a Sony VAIO with MCE. I had talked to Tech Support personnel at Palm and two local gurus; no one could help.

I read your advice on the ?rollup? patch; installed the patch; and, it worked the first time I tried it. Thanks!

However, I still have one problem. One of the applications did not sync.

Let me explain my situation. I had a Palm m505 handheld with Palm m505 software installed on a Win 98SE PC. My Palm m505 died; the touch sensitive screen stopped working. I acquired a Palm TX. I was able to install the Palm TX software on the Sony VIAO with MCE; but, I could not get the sync to work. I exported the following applications from my Win 98SE: (1) Contacts; (2) Calendar; and, (3) Memos; and then imported them to my Palm TX software on the Sony VAIO with MCE. I installed the ?rollup? patch; the sync worked; but only for (1) Contacts and (2) Calendar. Memos did not sync. I have over four years of data in the Memos file so I have to figure how to get that application to sync with the Palm TX handheld. I doubt if this is a sync problem; it is probably something simple like a switch not being set properly. However, everything seem to be set properly.

Can anyone help me with this problem?

PS: This is the first time I have addressed a forum like this so if I have not followed protocol please excuse me.

Hey everyone,

I have a Sony Clie PEG-NX70V and I'm trying to install the synching software on my new PC, which has Windows Media Center on it. The software is Palm Desktop for Clie 4.1 and Intellysync Lite 4.0. I've tried different installation CDs, but every time, the InstallShield installation process freezes before it's done. I click Cancel but nothing happens, and I have to restart my computer.

When I restart, I have a Palm Desktop icon on my PC, and things seem to be installed. When I press the synch button on my Clie, the computer recognizes it--it makes the "recognize hardware" tone--

then the Clie says Connecting with the Desktop using Cradle/Cable

and on my PC, the HotSync Progress window appears for a split second, and reads Determining Handheld Configuation, then Backing up Handheld Databases.

But then it all stops immediately, a split second later, and no information has been exchanged between my Clie and Outlook.

I tried running Microsoft Windows Update and installing all optional updates, but it didn't help.

Any thoughts? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Vikas
