All my life I've had a learning disability and been outside the mainstream classes in school. I wouldn't say I'm mentally retarded (no offense intended) but I have trouble with basic math such as multiplication and division, my reading comprehension level is 6th grade. Anything past 6th grade reading material I don't understand what I'm reading. I can read the words of news articles or adult literature but the overall message don't stick in my memory or make sense in my head.
I've tried going to college, I can't do their math or understand their reading material. I can't even run a cash register at McDonald's 'cause it takes me awhile to count the correct change out the drawer and the customers get upset, not to mention all those special order buttons confuse the h*ll outta me.
I'm poor, not to mention an idiot compared to most grown adults. l'm at the end of my rope and I need help, at least until I can find my rightful place in the world where I can make a contribution to society. But right now I don't know where my place is and I did poorly on my first minimum wage job (not mention first job ever) so I doubt I'll get employed anytime soon. My wife has a physical disability from a birth defect and she's been on SSI since her birth, we can barely make ends meat living off of $700.00 and something change a month.
How do I go about getting diagnosed for my mental disability and applying for SSI?
