I feel really weird expressing love to my father?

When he once wrote 'I love you' on my birthday, I literally cringed/twitched. I didnt like it that he said that at all. Actually for the past 6 years he has probably said 'I love you' like 10 times. He's not always in the house and he is pretty abusive when he's angry. I dont really talk to him. Is this normal? Why do I feel so weird?
 
Yes, its natural that you feel that way. First of all you're not used to his expressed love and second of all he's abusive. It's like he loves you and then hates you (not that he hates you for real), it just feels that way and it must be hard to figure out. You're normal in an abnormal situation.
