I exercise yet can't seem to tone up or lose weight..help!?

I have just started exercising, I am not fat, but not skinny and I have only been eating about 1000 calories everyday. Maybe 1000 of the wrong food cos I just don't know what to eat, anyway why am I not losing anything? I will push myself as hard as I have to since I have a modelling competition in 3 months so tell me what I can do to get toned and slim:)
