I heard that higher octane fuels should only be used for luxury cars, is that true?

Higher octane is fuel is required when an engine has a higher compression ratio. Putting high octane fuel will not damage anything. It will waste your money though.

89 octane is better than 87 only because it won't make your engine as dirty on the inside. putting in 91 or 93 on the other hand is not a good thing as this will kill your Horse Power and lower your MPG's. just stick with the 89 octane your engine will stay cleaner longer but you won't notice any difference in horse power and you might notice a slight improvement in MPG

You can put higher octane fuel in any vehicle you choose without any damage to anything but your wallet. Most vehicles these days are designed for use with the lower octane fuel , so there is no point in wasting money on higher octane fuels. Your owners manual will tell you which fuel to use.

89 is NOT high octane.

You can put in super/premium/high octane in ANY car. But only the high performance engine will MAKE USE of the extra octane. If your car does NOT require high octane, save your money and use regular.

Octane does NOT measure the power (energy) content, quality, etc. It only measures the RESISTANT to compression ignition. THAT IS ALL.

good luck...

Use whatever octane that is recommended for your car, see the owners manual. Car engines have different fuel requirements depending on a lot of things but being in a luxury car has nothing to do with it although a lot of luxury cars do require higher octane fuel.
