I dont understand how the postive and negative voltages work inkirchoff's voltage law ?

I understand how KVL works but what i dont understand how you are supposed to understand where how a resistor can have a postive on one side and a negative on the other by just looking at it. I have examples in my circuit book where i am supposed to lable the direction of the voltages (either voltage drop or rise) that have to resistors in series, on is 8 ohms one is 5 ohms the first goes from postiive to negative (volgate drop..makes sence), but the next one goes from negative to postive (i dont understand this.
