I don't understand how poems can not rhyme, but still be considered poems?

Of course I'm totally tune-deaf but I still don't see why anyone can just make normal writing a poem by hitting the enter button. I mean, what's the difference between a poem and a normal thing if the poems don't rhyme?
I know I sound completely ignorant and stupid, but it's something that I've wondered about for a long while and I want to start writing poetry and I really need your help.
Thanks.

P.S: You're free to call me a stupid, ignorant freak all you like as long as you actually answer my question.

Poetry is emotion put into words. How do you fit emotion into structure?
Poetry has all forms but one source. It comes from the heart, that's the only prerequisite.

Have fun and don't worry about 'rules'. There are none.

I agree with you, as I like poetry to rhyme in order for it to be like a
'real' poem, but that is only preference. There are some that have a
good rhythm so it seems like it rhymes, as it has the correct amount
of words/syllables, so it flows together beautifully w/o needing it to rhyme. Both take practice and thought, and that is what I consider
a 'real' poem. Throwing a bunch of thoughts together does not
constitute a poem, (as far as I am concerned) but just as was
mentioned, there are no rules.....these are only my thoughts on it.
and, as I said, my preferences. Good Luck and hope to see ur poems!
