I don't really know how to manage my money to achieve financial security?

I am 37 and single I support my girlfriend and our two kids in the house that I bought last year. I only have a couple of thousand dollars saved and I work two jobs in order to pay the bills. I am able to pay the bills and buy groceries but I don't really have extra money left for savings. I contribute to a 401K at work but only about 3% of my pay and it is only worth about $3,000 currently. I feel like I am going to be in trouble later if I don't do some savings or make some investments, but I don't really know how. I don't trust brokers who are getting rich off of commisions. Can anybody offer a solution short of getting a better job. I make about $40 K per year with my two jobs.
