ok, it starts off with a sniper on top of a parking garage shooting at seemingly random pedestrians. A retired cop who uses aliases of new york yankees sencond basemen eventually solves the crime. Also, the cover is gold with a red bullseye.
ok i did find it the author is
Lee Child and the novel is
One Shot.
it is a very good book if you like mystery /crime

It sounds familiar. I read something close to that when I was in elementary or middle school I think. It was in our reading book with a bunch of stories. I recall it just being called "The Sniper" or "Sniper". I just remember this guy being on a roof or something. That's all I remember. I'll let you know if I find anything on it.
