I confessed to this girl. Was it wrong?

I'm in college, and I have a friend who had a thing with this girl for awhile. They both liked each other, but they were in no rush to date because he had other things on his mind. I met this girl through my buddy last month and have hung with her and her friends numerous times since then. Sometimes alone and other times my bud was with as. It has got to the point where I like her myself. Me and my friend were talking the other night and he told me that she said i was going to become her "token guy friend" because he isn't around anymore. He said he was once the token guy friend so I figured it could be a good thing. I told her that I have a thing out of respect for her. She responded asking what it would mean for our friendship and if it meant that I wanted to stop hanging out with her becuase I said I know i shouldn't have a thing for her with my friend having done the same. She said I should talk to my friend about it but is glad that I told her because "we are friends" and "there is lots of fun to be had in the future." Did I make a mistake telling her? I was hoping for her to kind of say the same thing but she didn't. Opinions?
