i chat - online people appear offline?

i just started i chat so me and my friend added each other
we were both online looking on our own computers but on each others we appeared offline.
we tried logging out and logging back in and making all the info the same etc
please help we really would like this to work!!
on i chat on a mac computer

When you and your friend starting chatting online, I'm assuming that you are instant messaging each other, "IM's". If that is the case, take a look at your "buddy list". They should be about the same no matter if you use AOL, YAHOO, MSN, or others. It seems like that you and your friend have it set up that you have it set up as showing that you are offline even if you are not. Hope that helps.
