I Caught the Person Who Stole My Bike?

I had a mountain bike stolen from my house, they had cut through the lock. I have since seen the bike chained up not so far from my house and I met the "owner" (I use that term loosely) who claims it is his. The police became involved and seized the bike but returned it to the other guy due to lack of evidence (receipts weren't enough).

Do I still have the power to do anything? Also I have a rough idea of where he lives but I don't want to do anything illegal.
 
I can´t see the problem if you have receipts for the bike which i presume has the bikes serial number then it would clearly be your property unless the other party has papers to prove otherwise. If you don´t have the bikes serial number go back to the bike shop from where you bought it take your receipts and they should be able to obtain the bikes SN, take that back to the police to check it against the bikes, doing anything illegal on your part won´t solve anything apart from you being arrested. I would have expected the police to have asked the other person for proof of the bike being theirs and from where they obtained it since it was returned to him i can only assume he did enough to satisfy the police it was his
 
Bottom line is, the police aren't interested. It's not worth pursuing it as the only route to take now would be illegal.
 
steal the bike back!!it is legal if no one knows.like what he did to you..see..
 
1. "Steal" it back and say you found it. Put a long scratch on it and say that's how you recognise its yours.

2. "Steal" it back and spray it a different colour and say its a new bike which you bought of a friend.

3. Puncture the tyres every time you see the bike to force him to give it back.
 
Can you take them to the small claims court, cause with receipts you have evidence ~

Hopefully it was insured and get another but take extra precautions about security next time. Forget about the idiot that stole it, its not worth all the hassle that will end up at your door because of it.
