i can't tall with any one on xbox live with my headset why?

i have a wired headset and i put it on my Controller (that is wireless) and when i play halo i can't talk with no one on the bottom when i am online it just a Circle and line in it how can i talk with people i used to talk with my friends but now i can't i have two of the headsets but they don't work

this is another problem when i start my xbox live on the bottom it says that " it could not open Messenger " why i need help
