I cant get my ps3 to work on a rca t.v when i press input it flashes and does...

...nothing!? 10 points? i moved into university where they supply an RCA t.v and i bought a rca universal remote for it but when i press input the screen flashes and then it continues on with the regular programing! i need help i want to play my ps3. what should i do?
