I cant connect my Samsung to the PC !?

How should I connect my Samsung i5700 Galaxy Spica to the PC, I have windows xp, and I tried both 'New PC Studio' and 'PC Studio 7' but I cant connect it, I event tried different cables, it just starts charging the battery but does not connect..... the memory card connects, but the phone does not show up. ......(I want to connect it so I can update the device to Android v2.1).......thanks
