I cannot understand the concept of dating. What is behind this teen custom?

As a teenager in grade 9, I wonder at the time my peers spend wastefully of "dating". I will admit that it has a little point in adulthood, when looking for a partner, but in the teenage years, it seems to be a rather pointless social fad. I have had a few responses to the other similar questions asked on answerbag a few months ago, and here are some quotes of note:

"Dating before the age of 17 is damaging because it hardens your heart to true love because of previous failures"

"Dating leads to sex in many cases, and sex leads to babies which the parents are not prepared for."

I also have some points about dating to make. Dating has no actual benefit in terms of real life success, and the time could be better spent training the mind, at the age when the mind is most capable of learning. Critical brain neurons are being formed at this time. The only benefit to dating appears to be emotional, and since emotions are just a thought, and not real, it really gets nowhere.

Anyway, I would like to hear your opinions on this. Thank you.
