I cannot seem to get iTunes or Windows media player to recognise my collection of CDs?

I really want to upload them so that I can transfer to my iPod but instead of listing artist and songs, it just displays 'Unknown Album' Track 1,2,3,4, etc. Can anyone help please?
 
Have you tried "Winamp".
You can download free.
I using the above with my collection.
Works great.
