how much longer do you think i can run with a toyota engin and how do i know if the car has a timing belt or a chain

That's a hell of a lot of Ks but the state of the engine is dependent on a lot of factors such as the type of driving it has done (city vs highway), the model (and therefore the engine type), how well it's been maintained, any repairs or replacement parts, etc., etc.

You can't tell what condition the timing belt is in without looking at it unless it's making noise which would indicate that it is badly worn. It gets replaced at one of the major services (every 120,000kms I think) so, if it's been serviced regularly, it should have been replaced fairly recently. Check the service history.

I suggest that you get it looked at by a mechanic and also check the service book (if you have it). The mechanic should be able to tell you what sort of condition the engine is in, including the timing belt. If it's been well looked after and the driving history is favourable (eg. if it belonged to a sales rep or someone who typically did long highway trips and easy driving), there's every possibility that it has another 100,000kms left in it at least but without more details, it's very hard to tell for sure.

Hope this helps.

I, too, would have a garage give it a good service so you know for certain where you're starting from. Almost certainly it has a belt, so have that changed now, along with the water pump and the belt tensioner, and you're good to go for many thousands of miles.

If the old girl is running sweetly and you keep it well maintained it should run on for a long, long time. That applies to most engines, but particularly to Toyotas which have a solid reputation of being bullet-proof.

258,000 km is not alot my old toyota corolla had 750,000 miles on it when i bought it.i ran it for several years until it got hit by a drunk driver. as long as you have the mandatory work done it on time.it should keep running for a long time.for me if i had just bought the car i would change the timing belt just for my peace of mind.

You failed to mention the year of the vehicle but we'll presume it's at least 10 years old?

93 to 97 had a belt.

My 1996 Honda Civic has 280000kms...so far. :)

WOAH!!!! dude sell your car it's not going to run much longer, and for the timing belt or chain just take it to a mechanic they shuld tell you for free, because their not actuallly fixing anything.

That's a lot! If I were you I will change the Timing Belt or Chain because the car could last you 40000Km to 80000Km because Toyota is known for long-lasting and reputation.

Before 2000 it is a belt. When changed which is supposed to be every 75,000 miles, a tag is on engine block with date and miles.
