READ? This investigation assesses “to what extent did the massacre play into the overall acceptance of violence in the ANC?”
The ANC of South Africa fought white supremacists through the means of peace and eventually violence to remove apartheid from government policy. The ANC was forced by constant oppression to change their tactics of fighting white supremacy. Their initial plan was to fight oppression with peaceful protest; however, as this tactic failed they progressed towards violence. It is accepted that one event that lead to change in tactics of the ANC is the Sharpeville massacre due to white supremacists’ experience of rebellion from the ANC after this event. It is my belief that violence was accepted on a large extent due to ANC’s experience of constant oppression by Apartheid Laws passed 1949-56, to a moderate extent from the Luthuli speech, and to a smaller extent from the Sharpeville massacre in 1960. As evidentiary support a common reference used throughout this investigation will be South Africa 1948-1994 The Rise and Fall of Apartheid by Martin Roberts which gives a overview of the apartheid laws and the Sharpeville massacre which will be presented, and evaluated by its origin, purpose, limits, and value. The evidence will also be analyzed in the investigation to come to a conclusion.
