The most important thing is to make sure that the tank does not leak. If the price is right and it does have a small leak at the seam (no cracks in the glass) you can buy silicone to help reseal the edges from most pet stores.

Do not buy the silicone that is used for household chores. It would be poisonous to the fish after you add water. Chemicals that are toxic will leech out into the water.

If the leak is large, forget about it. The structural integrity off the tank could be in question. Water is heavy.

Make sure you have it in place before adding water. They are hard to move after they are filled and moving them will place additional stress on the glass after it is filled with water.

A small example would be like trying to move 1 sandwich or 5 on a single paper plate. Definitely easier with less stress with 1 sandwich.

As far as supplies (the filter being next), just plug it in a see if it runs for a few seconds. Do not do this too long as it will be bad for the filter. Make sure it is well cleaned before using it though and buy new filter media for it.
