I am starting a Graphic Design business from home, do i need an ABN? Its just me not having employees. I will have a website and anyone can contact me for graphic design. Thanks.
I'm finding the whole process so confusing....im at the step where they are asking what type of business.... there is no small graphic design business listed...the closest option is professional artist, which i don't think im at that standard yet...i put other, then it says i don't need an ABN?? GOSH they don't make it easy!!!
 
No. You can work freelance, as long as you declare your income to the tax department.

That said, you might need to register for GST, since many of the people who will use your services may need proper tax invoices for their business purposes. And you'll need that to be able to recover some of your own GST payments.

There are any number of reasons why having a ABN can help you reduce your tax liabilities and your expenses. So, be careful - you don't want the tax department coming down on you when you can least afford it.
