I am not on my daughter's birth certificate - can I do anything about?

My daughter's mother and I were together for a fairly short time, until she disappeared without giving me any notice or reason. I was distraught, as the relationship had been going extremely well and she had even asked me to marry her - which I was delighted by and very much wanted.
8 months later she contacted me by email, from her home in Lithuania, telling me that she was pregnant and soon to give birth, in Italy.
We have remained in contact and seen each other since then and I have been able to see my daughter (when I could afford to travel from the UK to Lithuania or Italy) and in truth I still love her and very much love our daughter.
However, when I saw the birth certificate, I was saddened to note that I had not been included on it and indeed my daughter does not know who I am, even now at the age of 4.
I should also say that I had never been violent toward my daughter's mother and the reason that she has given for both her disappearance and subsequent omission of me from our daughter's birth certificate is that I am not a wealthy man.
I feel as though I have no rights in this at all and seem to have no way of ensuring that my daughter will ever know who I am and am desperate to find a way to correct this. Any time that I have tried to raise this issue, she simply cuts contact - sometimes for months at a time, so I seemed to be forced to accept my position, or lose contact with my daughter altogether.
Please help?
Thank you.
