I am looking for a new bike, what is a high quality, low cost bike? Needs to be durable?

I am looking to buy a new bike. I am going to be riding it around town, might be a little rough on it. What is a durable dependable bike to buy that is fairly cheap. I've been looking at wal-mart and scheels at the bikes around $100-125. I'm thinking a mountain bike is probably best? If anyone knows of a bike that has few problems i'd like to know!

I have found Scheels to be a decent place to get some bike work done, but their prices are not usually the cheapest.

The previous post is 100% correct: cheap and high quality are mutually exclusive. Look at the Trek 820 and Specialized Hard Rock to get an idea of what the entry-level mountain bike market has to offer.

Sorry, but quality and cheap, can never meet in the world of bikes. And anything from Walmart or any other big box store is going to be junk. A mountain bike is best for off road use. You maybe better off with a hybrid, but it won't happen in your price range. Bikes from Walmart are heavy and of poor quality. Some are "one size fits all". And to make it worse, they're put together by high school kids who make $8 an hour and don't have a clue about bikes.
