I am looking for a book about a young french girl who marries an older man. Any ideas?

I am sure that the story takes place in Paris. The girl meets an older man, who denies her early affections for him. He does end up marrying her when she gets a little older. I cannot really remember much more than that, aside from the fact that he dies a short while later from complications due to some illness.
