price before or aftr tax? I am uusing a supplier discount and was given a selling price but taxes were added before the incentive by gm were taken. Does anyone know the rules in NJ?
The price I was quoted was after tax. The supplier price plus tax, then minus the cutomer cash back rebate, the leasee rebate and the cutomer loyalty (total of $4750) was all taken after the tax was calculated. So before I go back to the dealer today or tomorrow to finalize my price with the F&I guy I want to make sure that they are wrong. (in NJ)

The rule everywhere is that rebates are taxable, just like it came out of your own pocket. However, discounts are not taxable because the price is reduced before tax is applied. Therefore rebates and "cash-back" incentives are different than discounts.

the incentive is a rebate. if you buy something in the store that has a $25.00 rebate you pay tax on that $25.00 same thing with the car
