...- detrimental or advantageous? I have to write about the written and spoken modes, and especially the effect of text messaging on our langauge (abbreviations etc, as well as other subsystems including syntax). I havent found many new paper articles on it though, so if anyone could help me out with any good examples of recent issues/articles it would be great!!!

Here are a couple:

Kids are used to texting. The average person between the ages of 14 - 19 text messages 5 times a day! And think - most of us only write something in normal English a few times a week. Since kids are so used to texting instead of writing English, the intinct takes over and before you know it teens are using "b/c, u 2, 2morow, cul8er" in their English work.

You could also mention how normal words, like "gay", are now used in a derogatory fashion. Remember all those rap songs that use words like "Laffy Taffy" and "Milkshake" ? Look what it's done to every day language!

And you could talk about how words that usually mean negative things - like "wicked" and "bitch" - are everyday, normal, and sometimes even positive words.

Whatever the case - good luck with your paper!
