I am being sued for a debt and I am being summoned by an attorney.?

Can I contact the credit holder and make payment arrangements with them, or do I just have to go with the lawsuit and offer what I can pay then? I am being sued in a court 3 hours from my home and would rather settle it out of court. Not trying to avoid it, I owe it... just don't know what to do now.
