I am applying for the job listed below and I would like to know how to create 3-d models. The art part I can do it's just the computer stuff I am confused about.

3d solid modeler/artist – independent contractor work

Custom manufacturer producing variety of molded products looking for experienced 3d modeler. These are primarily Playground Sculptures, requiring a balance between aesthetics, functionality, and ease of production. Sculptures range from realistic animal shapes, to themed elements, to fantasy creatures.

Responsibilities will include:
• Create or source digital models based on client demand or marketing strategy
• Create compelling visual documentation to help sell projects
• Develop mold design based on digital model
• Ensuring quality and integrity of the artistic vision from inception to completion

Required Skills/Experience:
• 3d digital modeling ability and tools
• Ability to communicate artistic vision
• Demonstrated experience taking a project from inception to completion

This will be contract work on specific projects, using your own equipment and software.

The contract aspect of it, listed there at the end, is bad with your experience level. Modeling is frustrating with a 2D screen and mouse, and slow for the above-average. I would say tho', if you can gather a portfolio of what they 'want' to see (review their listing above), go in for an interview. Explain you are a student of 3D, specifically, SoftImage (pronouce it EEE-mag -- obscure Canadian French software) but that 3D computer means many things. Ask what type of files would you be required to furnish for contract? Pass yourself off as a partnership with a geek.

Because...

The people on the street are fascinated by 3D software because it is the closest they will ever come to photo-realism, yet they have no art training. And, there a many graduates of tech schools using 3D software.
