I am allergic to codeine and loratab, surgery in 2 weeks what is safe to take?

In 2 weeks I am having surgery. I have severe allergic reactions to both codeine and loratab. I swell up and have difficulty breathing. I am very cautious of any Rx that I take because I have learned that doctors do not always believe that you have allergies to medication and may try to prescribe something that contains the medication. This happened to me many years ago when I had my first surgery. The doctor prescribed loratab and when the nurse brought it in I asked her what it was. She told me Loratab and I was like I am not taking that I am allergic to it. She then left and came back with Tylanol 3 that contains codeine and there again I asked her what it was and she told me. I was ticked by now. I told her that I was allergic to codeine and loratab that it is on my chart and if I take them my airway will swell shut. She told me that was all that the doctor prescribed me and that I would have to wait till morning for him to write me something new. It was a very long night of terrible pain. Finally when the doctor arrived for his rounRAB at noon I was not the nicest patient. I could not believe that he had prescribed me that medicine. He apologized and then gave me some darvocets. Over the last 20 years that is the only pain medicine I have taken but it does not really knock the pain. It is pretty weak. Does anyone know of something else that does not contain those drugs that I can jot down. I will once again be asking the doctor or nurse what drugs I am taking.
 
Hi there, I to am allergic to Codien... Same like you swelling up so bad my eyes cant even open or so I was told by my mom.. I have taken other narcotics, Hydrocodone and currently I have been on Oxycodone for 2 years with no problems although in the past 2 weeks I have been itching like crazy and now I fear I may be allergic to it suddenly but the doctor does not think so and I cant just stop the drug. Yeah I was given Darvocet after my c section and you are so right that it really does nothing for the pain...

I think Hydrocodone does not have codien in it but I dont know if its safe, ask your doc but it works ok an is not as string as the oxycodone though I think the oxy works better but the hydro to me last longer.. I dont know.. There are so many, Diluadid worked good for me and I dont think codien is in that..

Sorry I probably am not much help but me being allergic to the codien like you, I have had other with no problems. Maybe they can give you a dose in the hospital to see how you do???
 
Sorry I did not see the loratab part, maybe then no to the hydrocodone cause its in that one.. Try the percocet (oxycodone).
 
I have over 40 drug allergies including morphine and oxycodone. I have found that the best way to deal with this is to tell your pharmacist and have them put it in the computer. These drugs come under so may names that the only way to make sure you don't get one of them is to have it signaled on your pharmacist's computer. You can also ask them to print out a list of all the drugs containing the 2 allergies. But since they are always changing names and changing formulas, it's easier to have their computer do the work.

There are lots of drugs you can take after surgery. The 2 you have really aren't that strong and rarely given after surgery. When you for your pre-op testing you can tell them of your allergies and it will be on your chart and they will use something else. You'll probably have to wear an allergy bracelet in the hospital that identifies those 2 drug allergies(and any others you might have).

But don't worry...there are lots of others to try.

And MrsBoston was right when she caught herself...hydrocodone is what is in Lortab so you can't take that.

Hi there did you change your doctor yet? Oh some people thought that demerol is great but for another person it didn't really touch the pain but at least they were not allergic to it.
 
You could take Darvocet with some Ibuprofen (400mg every 4 hours)

Alternatively you could try tramadol plusibuprofen or acetaminophen.

have a long discussion with your doctor before you go under the knife to make sure he understanRAB your condition, and has prescribed apropriate drugs.
