Here is a movie review of the animated feature film ' How to Train your Dragon' by DreamWorks Studios.

This has been published in our May issue.

How to Train Your Dragon.
Just when you say to yourself that ‘this is the best DreamWorks movie ever!’. Eventually, another masterpiece comes along to question your thought. Something bigger, something better, something even more heartbreaking. If you are still in China, hanging out with Po, the Kung Fu Panda, its about time you set sail to Viking land to learn: ‘How to Train Your Dragon’.

‘How to Train Your Dragon’ is about a young and puny Viking lad named ‘Hiccup’ who, like his fellow Vikings wants to slay dragons more than anything else. But ‘Hiccup’, in spite of being the heroic village chief’s son, is looked down upon by the entire village because of his lack of determination and physical strength to kill one. However when he does succeed in trapping a ‘Night Fury’ - the most elusive and feared upon of all dragons and on seeing the poor beast wounded and trapped in his net, he decides that he doesn’t want to kill dragons after all. So he therefore releases the poor creature. And by bringing him food and mending his wing, he and the dragon, who he names ’Toothless’, become the best of companions. Together they must discover that not everything is what it seems and every being, man or beast must be given a chance to understand the other.

Apparently, as you’d have rightly guessed, a friendship between a young boy and his pet dragon never does quite last. His father , disgraced by ‘Hiccup’ befriending a dragon, captures ‘Toothless’ so he could use him to get to the heart of the dragon’s nest and rid them all, once and for all.
Will Hiccups’ father succeed in destroying all of the poorly misunderstood beings? What will happen to ‘Toothless’? Will ‘Hiccup’ and ‘Toothless’ ever get together again? Well, because we’ve already spoilt quite a lot for you, you’ve got to watch the movie to find out what happens. And watch it you must!

If you’re still wondering whether to watch the movie or not, we’ll tell you this. It is neither good nor bad, it is a DreamWorks movie! That pretty much speaks for itself. And because it is a DreamWorks movie, it has the usual magic formula: snazzy CGI, an ensemble of memorable characters and a touching script which is more moral science than a money churner. This particular studio believes in making movies which have a heart and How to Train Your Dragon is no exception. Though one might think that the premise is one that has been overly explored, HTYD actually looks into a lot of issues such as wars, the communication gap between parents and children and even racism from various perspectives. This is one movie, from which you could actually learn a thing or two about life when stepping out of the cinema theatre.

The cast and their voice talents require special mention. ‘Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third’ is aptly voiced by Jay Baruchel (She’s Out of My League), who’s done a great job of voicing the weak but very compassionate protagonist. Not surprisingly, the valiant and fearless Viking Chieftain, Stoick the Vast is voiced by none other than Gerard Butler (300, The Bounty Hunter), who’s given a truly believable performance, especially in times where the character is genuinely worried about his son’s future in the clan after his time.Last but not the least, Hiccup’s love interest, Astrid, the athletic and no-nonsense girl is voiced by our very own Ugly Betty – America Ferrera.

So, its got a great story, characters that everyone can relate to, witty and thought provoking dialogues and one liners (watch out for ‘’Everything we know about you is wrong’’, it’ll melt your heart!), what more do you need? Well, How to Train your Dragon has one of the most spellbinding visuals in recent animated feature film history, even blowing away famous DreamWorks projects such as Kung Fu Panda and Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, out of the water. The scenes where ‘Hiccup’ and ‘Toothless’ take to the sky are breathtaking in every sense! And if your jaw dropped after watching Avatar’s climax, it might be a good idea to leave it there until you’ve witnessed the one in this movie. If you’re looking for more!?,you can watch the movie in all it’s 3D glory, where the fireballs fired by the dragons really set you ablaze and….we’ll just assume you’ve already watched Avatar and / or Alice in Wonderland.

As mentioned earlier, this is more of a wonderful moral science lesson that schools you on the meanings of: friendship, loyalty, courage, bravery, love and above all, humanity. We live in times glorifying violence and war and if you really want you and your family to feel how good it is to be human, we suggest you watch How to Train Your Dragon.
