I too am a newspaper journalist, and I'm not sure if this would be the most beneficial way to find research. I would suggest finding some news on socks. Go to google news, and type in socks, see if anything interesting comes up. Also, try studying the history of them. Interview people on what they think life would be like without them, and find out the purpose they REALLY serve in our day to day lives. Good Luck!!
