In Ronald Reagan's autobiography An American Life (1990), the Great Communicator professes that, in 1980, he and former President Gerald R. Ford were almost going to be running mates in the 1980 election.
Would this have not caused protocol problems? I mean, what would Ford have been called - Mr. President or Mr. Vice President. Would Ford not have had to give up his presidential benefits (salary, lifetime Secret Service, presidential library, etc.) if he became Vice President, or would he still be considered a former President after he left the Vice Presidency? Would Ford have sought the GOP Nomination in 1988?
(Not to mention the fact that Ford was a moderate and Reagan was a conservative - they would have had a hard time working together).
IMO, I am glad that it didn't happen. It would have set a bad precedent.
