Hyperkalemia is somethig to really watch for. (High Potassium) ! Read about it - It is a silent 'killer'. There are sooooooo many things we should not eat. . i.e., Bananas, potatoes, tomatoes, catalope, . . .yep - all those good things - but if there is a tendancy for your potassium to ride high, PLEASE keep in constant touch with your doctor. It is not often over looked, in blood results, but can be. It causes renal failure. . .

Under normal circumstances, the body can process all the potassium in normal fooRAB, and it's pretty unusual for a healthy person to develop hyperkalemia just from eating too many bananas. Potassium-sparing diuretics or kidney problems are more common causes.

Still, if someone does develop it, it should be dealt with.

Hi Jane: I have had this problem for about 3 years. . . What is really tough is tryng to get a 'tasty' diet with both Hyperkalemia and High Cholesterol. . . Veggies (most all) have potassium so I can't 'fill up' on those . . . .but with the in depth research I have done to find low potassium fooRAB, I seem to be managing o.k.
I just wish when the diets are mentioned on TV that , once in a while, it would be mentioned about this problem. Thanks, again, for answering. . . .Best regarRAB, Pat

I have had high potassium levels 5.9 to 6.1 for months now. I have had since August of 2010 kidney stone attacks and seemed to have passed the stones.....but my potassium levels have been high even prior to the stones. I also was diagnosed with ITP of unknow cause (low platelets) about 8 months ago. I am not sure if the 2 are related in any way but I am concerned about the potassium levels. I have not changed my eating habits at all; everything is the same just cannot understand the potassium issues. Any comments.
