HVAC Techs - question on Sanyo Inverter?

I have a 11,000 btu Sanyo inverter heat pump that does a fantastic job on our sunroom.
Only problem is when they installed it they put the outside unit directly under the eve and gutter of my house. That really isn't a problem except this winter. There's been an inordinate amount of snow which turns to water runs off the roof and hit the unit. It immediately starts to re-freeze and blanket the unit.
Eventually it covers enough of the unit to reduce it's efficiency to zero.

I'm thinking about building a cover to shield the unit. It would probably be too expensive to move the unit out from under the gutter.
My question - If I built a cover about 6" behind the unit that comes up over the unit allowing about 12" clearance on top and leaving the front completely open would I cause any problems with it's operation?

Thanks in advance.
No kidding the gutters are overloaded. We've had about 40" of snow in the last four days.
Callipyg - what would be involved in moving it?
Also the pvc drain pipe is freezing and forcing water back to the inside unit which then leaks inside.
