HVAC: Must an outdoor A/C unit be level?

We have a Trane XL19i unit (outside 4 ton unit) installed on a slope in the backyard. The back of the unit is about 3-4 inches lower than the front. Will this have any affect on operation or life of unit? If I raise the slab and put a shim under it could it hurt the unit? Thanks.
