Hi,It sounds like inner ear crystals this is my first message on this site. I had dizzy spells just like you husband since 12/98 my first time. Since then 3/03 , 7/06 and just several weeks ago 3/09. Wow it's scary mine can last minutes but not feeling myself for several weeks. I was just told last week after 11 yrs of having this problem it's all due to these small crytals that break away from your inner ear and disrupt your balance. These crytals are normal for all of us to have but for some strange reason yet to explained they travel through the inner ear tube and mix in the ear fluid and cause confusion with your balance. The brain tells itself that this is not right and begins to correct itself thus causing the dizzy spells. You can be sitting , standing it can happen with no warning. I will be seeing several other Dr's soon they tell me they can show me away to move my head to help it stop and put these crytals back where they belong. There is Medication you husband should keep with him at all times. Antivert 12.5 mil , 25mil , 50 mil.
I use 25 Mi it doe's help but will make him drowsy I hope you can drive if he is not able to. I hope I helped you ? I will be seeing some Dr's soon about what I can do too.
