As a secretary, I sometimes move boxes (1 or 2) when I'm looking for a closed file. They're maybe 25-50 lbs, IDK, but I'm only 95 so I do sometimes feel a little back strain after. 2 days ago, I lifted one of these boxes that was over my head, and then lifted it back up. I didn't think about the extra strain - it seemed heavier than the others I'd lifted, too. So, the whole day I felt back pain, and the next 2 mornings I've woken up with it. I don't think I've injured anything, but shouldnt this pain be going away? It's not really bad and goes away w/rubbing alchohol, but will I have back pain later on in life? My dad did a lot of lifting in youth, and now has back probs emerging; my mom was in a car accident in youth, got srugery, was better but now has back pain. Or is back pain just a part of being older? Should i have this looked at? Is it ok to do my daily sit-ups?

Hi,

well, first thing did you let your supervisor know? Yeah I know you don't want to do that but I think you should. And it depenRAB on how long the pain lasts. I'd lay off the sit ups for the next week or so and see if the pain subsides. If it continues I'd see my primary care physician. Its probably just muscular. You should always be careful how you lift. If you think its too heavy ask for help. Keep it close to your body when you lift and bend those knees!

Oh, trust me, I did. He said he doesn't want me lifting boxes any more. He will get the other atty. who is a big guy to lift them when I want one.

I lift a box or two maybe once a week, but this one, unlike the others, was slightly above my head and I didn't judge the weight of it before pulling it down. I was stressed b/c my boss was adament about finding this old file, and I normally wouldn't touch those boxes, but thought it would be easier to dig through than paging through the old filing book which is horribly organized. Unfortunately, the box I wanted was on the bottom and I continued to move a few boxes after lifting the high-up box. I didn't feel massive pain when I lifted it, but I felt pain.

The very first time I had to lift boxes, I felt some back pain later on in the day, and it went away. With this time, I felt pain when I woke up yesterday and through the morning, but putting rubbing alcohol on it made it go away. It's not like a sharp pain as in something is off-kilter (I really don't know much about the back), but dull pain. Today, it's hurt all day long, but I think the damp weather is affecting it. IDK, I have to call my doctor's office Mon. to schedule a follow-up appt. for Septeraber so I may mention it if the pain does not subside.

If teh pain is going away with rubbing achohol, it's probably not serious..You probably just are having some muscle abuse. BUT this has told you not to lift this type of weight...especially when it is above your head. That puts extra stress on your back, no matter how big you are.

I'm an EA to a VP so I know what you're talking about...buty since my surgeries, I have found that i have not guilt calling on of my big guys to move things for me....

I would take some Aleve for a few days and see if that doens't help clear it up...
