Hummingbird vs Snapdragon: The 1 Ghz Smartphone Showdown

This is a pretty long, and detailed review of basically the internals and how everything works with Smartphone processors, graphics processors, even how the difference in the memory inside the phones impacts performance with LPDDR1 vs the newer LPDDR2 Dual Channel Architecture Ram (in the Droid X, & Galaxy S.) What bottlenecks performance, & what phones really have what. He talks about the 3GS and Nexus One, all the way up to the EVO and upcomming Droid X and 2. The explanation of bottlenecked performance based on the memory is very important. Read down about halfway where it mentions CPU's and GPU's to get to the good stuff. I found this really informational and helpful for choosing my next phone based on where technology is going, and what is soon to come.

this some good stuff, I think Samsung has their own custom gpu. it seems the hummingbird gpu out performs the 540

Yea, Very interesting. it's a long read. but very detailed.

basically he's saying the hummingbird, and the new OMAP 36xx processors are using LPDDR2 dual channel ram, so there will be much more bandwidth and much less bottlenecking and that will allow for better CPU, and GPU performance. makes complete sense. It looks like the Droid X will be an amazing phone once it gets 2.2 and the Galaxy S will be also. I just feel more comfortable upgrading into Moto over Sammy...

He also mentions the 1.3 Ghz Snapdragon will also have LPDDR2 and the Adreno 220 graphics that should match the Droid X and be out in the next 3-5 months. but until we get better and faster LPDDR2 speeds (Q4), the hummingbirds GPU will be the best graphics until Q4 when the OMAP4 series comes out because it will have much more memory bandwidth, along with a dual core CPU, and wicked graphics. I also like how TI mentions that new OMAP4 cpu makes browsers load from 5 seconds or so, down to 2 seconds. I can't wait.

by the end of 2010 my Android Phone will be all I need, and I'm selling my netbook

i'd never sell my netbook no matter what phone i have.
When you're in a cafe, or vacation, do you really want to be browsing on a 4" screen? not i. But to each their own.

haha i know huh. but it's basically saying even snapdragon 1.3 Ghz will only be close to the Galasy S in terms of GPU. but the cpu will be slightly better..

I also don't think we'll be getting dual core stuff till early 2011. so I'm probably getting the Droid X and I'll upgrade in January again. (love having the best)

I hear ya, I drive my wife up a wall with this stuff.

I'm going to wait and see about the droid-x in so far as not pre-order it. I'd love to get on the verizon network, I have better coverage in areas I go to but I'll wait until regular folks post their reviews/experiences on it.

lol and I'm still waiting on the stemcell processor from Zii labs :-(

T. I. is working like crazy Ull see. and let's not forget that soon or better said later this year. our pc guys will be selling stuff as well. T.I.if u remember was also working on a blue tooth, gps,WiFi all in one to combine with their 2.0 processor. Batt's will be happy

yup.. They are planning to have the best SOC for the OMAP4 series that will have everything, as well as have good efficiency. I'm thinking out first 2011 phones will be amazing.
