HTML Design: DIV's vs. TABLE's?

Is there any reason not to use the DIVs for web page design? I was taught to use tables for web page design, but DIV's are much more flexible, as you can place them anywhere, even over other DIV's. Is there a browser incompatibility issue with DIV's? Is there a reason to use tables instead of DIV's?
