HTML codes/tags done on Mac appear on site. WHY?

I copied and pasted the same tags that had worked in Windows into Text Edit (My Tiger OS X 10.4.11 doesn't have Simple Text) and then converted the file into HTML format.

However, neither Safari nor Firefox worked.

What do I need to (re)set on the Mac to write and apply HTML successfully?
