HTML and drop down list boxes?

I have a drop down list box with lots of different elements inside. However, it is too wide, more wide than it needs to be. How do i make it so that it will take the longest word and make it that maximum size? I cant use CSS, but any html or javascript will be great.
 
u can use java applets that too they have the flexibility to increase the textfield's length depending on the user's requirement

so write the code for that n include as java script in html..that's it..!
