HTC Pure, how do you change it so that you get alerted when you have a new text message?

I just got the HTC Pure on AT&T a couple days ago, and whenever I get a text or sms message, there's no alert. I don't want to void my warranty and edit registry, and I want to be able to have it vibrate when I get a text. Please help.
