HTC Magic won't allow me to connect via 3G?

I just bought the HTC Magic, and it all works fine, except I cannot get on the internet via a 3g connection, meaning I am always reliant on wifi. I have been onto settings and can't find anything about it. Does anyone know how to change it so that it will connect via 3g?
