HTC Hero unlock, no company fee?

I have a HTC Hero, which I have bought from a friend, who was getting a new phone. I can't get the tele-company to unlock it (unless I pay 70$), and now I'm thinking: Is there any chance I can unlock it from home, via a cable or something :)
