HTC HERO PICTURE QUESTION?

I'm trying to download photo's on my phone (HTC Hero) to my PC. I have sync, but that doesn't do it. I don't have the SD card that the mini card goes into. Why can't I just call up "my computer" and drop and drag? It seems simple enough, but apparently it's not. If I need an app, what is it, or is the only way to get a new SD card. I also know I can email them to myself, but I'm at sea and unable to right now. Damn the bad luck, and I like the phone
