HTC Evo vs iPhone 3GS

Here is my situation. I just bought my iphone 4 months ago. It's still in wonderful shape because I take care of it.

Previous to getting my iPhone I was on Sprint and liked the service I was getting. With my iPhone I get a lot of dropped calls where I live. Just last night I had to call my girlfriend back twice during the same conversation because of dropped calls.

Aside from the dropped calls I love my iPhone. I use it all the time. Before going for the iphone, when I was still on sprint, I considered renewing my contract and picked up a Hero for a couple of weeks. I really liked the Hero as well, but when I realized I had the chance to jump ship to an iphone I did that instead. The hero just really didn't compare to the hardware specs and software specs of the iphone at the time. So it was an easy choice.

Now that the Evo is announced I'm having second thoughts. In a month or so the next iPhone will be on the market and the value of my 3GS will go down. If I act now I figure I can get at least $350-400 for my iphone, which would be enough to pay off the early termination fee and pick up an EVO. Basically switch phones and carriers without any money out of pocket.

The specs on the evo look really nice. Especially the camera with HD video and the bigger screen.

I'm really not a big app user, the size of the app store difference between apple and android doesn't bother me. I've already checked and all the apps I actually use on my iPhone are available for Android.

The only down side is that I live in Detroit and Sprint doesn't seem to have any plans in the works to bring 4G to my area. They haven't even announced us as an upcoming city. So it could be two years before we see 4G service here. So in other words the 4G features everyone is ranting and raving about on the Evo don't apply to me. Sadly. :(

I use my phone mostly for browsing, listening to music/podcasts and phone calls. I also use it for shooting photos and video a lot. I have a six year old so it's always handy. Here and there I use some apps and play Doodle Jump (which is also on Android now). I would probably watch more yoututbe videos but youtube over 3G on the iphone is worthless and unwatchable.

The other difference is the cost of service. Last I check sprint was unlimited everything for $70 a month. I currently pay over $90 for my iphone. So I could save $20 a month.

What would you do in my situation?

I don't have the spare cash to just buy the evo first. I'd have to sell the iphone first to get the evo. So about the best I could do is play around with it in the store first. But it's not like I haven't played around with Android and senseUI for a couple of weeks before. I already know it's a decent os, even if not as polished as iPhone os.

Naw stay with your Iphone Evo its a good phone not worth giving your self headaches. you got a nice app store thats keeps growing you have the new OS 4. Evo doesnt have 3d gaming yet untill next update. plus theirs going to be better phones soon. The only plus thing about the evo its the HDMI tv out stand and camera and the processor. You seem to love your iphone so why change it. I did that mistake of buying the g1 and almost got rid of my n82 but after 4 months I saw that I was too deeply in love with my old phone and had many things android didnt offer at that time.

I want a larger screen than what I have on the iPhone. That is why I am thinking of Evo.

I don't do games - interested in customizing (my iPhone is jailbroken), camera, storing photos taken with my DSLR, and browsing.

If I go for the Evo instead of a iPHone 4 (when it comes out) what would I miss from my iPhone?

i think you're already sold on the evo for the:

1 - service
2 - larger screen

i'm pretty sure that even with the $10 "premium data" charge, it's cheaper than your at&t bill.

It may seem that way, but aside from the small screen and slower processor (I only have a 3g) I like the iPhone. If I don't lose convenience and functionality I would like the EVO.

I had a couple iphones and then got the Droid and now the incredible and would never go back to the apple OS. Android is much nicer and I won't even get into how much better any other service is that at&t.

I want to start off by saying a) that I am not at all an Apple Fanboi; I'm a PC-guy till the day I die...and b) that I DEEPLY wanted this phone. DEEPLY. With all that is within me. It's so sexy, so awesome, so capable! I was willing to trade in my iPhone 3GS, the only Apple device I've ever owned - and the single greatest piece of technology that I've ever owned for that matter - for the HTC Evo. I am also still in contract with AT&T and so I would have terminated early and paid the fine just to switch to Sprint so I could have this phone. I absolutely love my iPhone - it's familiar to me, easy to operate, and fun. But I hate AT&T. I want to see Flash display in the Safari browser. I want to be able to customize my iPhone background. Push notification constantly fails. Dropped calls. I despise the bottleneck of Apple & iTunes. I hate the lack of compatibility it has sometimes with my PC.

But after reading all of the reviews, I am sorry to say that I will not be getting this beautifully gorgeous phone. And here's why: Horrible battery life. MicroSD card failures. Can't talk and surf at the same time on Sprint (only on 4G, not on 3G). Gotta pay an extra $10 for something that I might not even use because it will kill the battery and might be spotty connectivity at best. Can't install apps to the MicroSD card. A camera lens that the phone actually sits on, resulting potentially in a scratched-up lens.

I'm super bummed. I mean, it's only a phone, right? But still: Why didn't both HTC and Apple really think of these things? Why not put absolutely everything in the phone that people will need, and MAKE IT RIGHT, so there are no regrets on any side? Sprint: Why make a 4G network and then charge a surplus on it? What's with not providing protection for the camera lens so that I can actually ditch an extra device and use the camera on this phone? Apple: lose the ego and incorporate Flash. AT&T: Fix your network so calls don't drop.

As a followup, I certainly will not be upgrading my iPhone 3GS now that I see that the iPhone 4G screen is smaller...what a stupid move by Apple. When will people get it right???

No one is certain the 4th Generation iPhone screen is smaller. I would bet that it's the same size as the old.

Personally, both the EVO and the iPhone are great phones. If you want the phone with the larger network, go with the iPhone.

That's all relative to where you are located. In my area, Sprint is like a 3rd world country. AT&T and Verizon are tops, with the edge going to AT&T.
